Most of us are convinced that the media regularly underreports record sales. It seems that Nielsen/Soundscan's numbers can't possible be correct, nor does it seem likely they have the ability to dig deeply into the sales portals where much of the vinyl activity occurs.

Sadly this is not April 1st, and this is not a joke. The Banning CA facility housing Apollo/Transco lacquer manufacturing burned today and is apparently a total loss. More than 80 firefighters fought the dangerous chemical-laden fire. I haven't had a chance to get into the story details but hopefully no one was seriously injured in the blaze.

There's still a great deal of news to post from both the Munich High End and T.H.E. Show Newport Beach and that will be coming shortly. Meanwhile, are you ready for a mat test?

The annual Manila HiFi Show takes place at the Dusit Thani Hotel this November 8th and 9th. It's difficult to believe a full year has passed since analogplanet editor Michael Fremer attended the show but it has. Hopefully this year The Philippines will be spared a typhoon!

What's a story like this doing in an analog space? While it's a news item covering a new digital product, I was honored to be the only American audio writer invited to the launch so while the piece will be published in Stereophile, I decided to post it here as well. I hope you find at least the history of Marantz interesting, but also the concept of downloading DSD files from the Internet and playing them back from a computer. In any case, I think of music services like Spotify and Pandora the "Evatone sheets" of our digital era. You can use them to audition new music before dropping your hard earned cash on the vinyl version.—Ed.

In this case, going down the road wherever leads directly to your turntable. To wit: Mark Knopfler’s The Studio Albums 2009-2018, a 180g 9LP box set, will be released on October 7, 2022 by UMe/EMI. Read on for more details about who mastered it, who cut it, and what’s on it. . .

A reader forwarded a new video showing Mark Knopfler, who had recorded his share of albums digitally, back in the studio recording to analog tape using tube compressors to achieve the desired sound based on sound not necessarily the latest technology.

Thanks to an analogplanet.com reader's excellent suggestion, the blind mat test will include the original 96/24 file from which the Chasing the Dragon LP was cut. Recording engineer and label owner Mike Valentine was kind enough to send the original file of the Vivaldi "Concerto For Two Mandolins" that was used for the mat recordings.
