I would love to have this on viny, that is, I have the CD only, but if you could recommend an issue I would look for it. Currently, new I see only Four Men with Beards, ehh, and something in the UK Edsel Records ? MOV did one in 2012 apparently though that doesn't appear and surely isn't from tape. The original Asylums are fetching a pretty good price, but mabey I'm just not making sense of it. Silver Raven is transcendental. Can you Take me higher
Beach House Announces Gene Clark "No Other" Project and Tour
The Baltimore based band Beach House (Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally) announced today a tour "in celebration" of Gene Clark's 1974 album No Other. Members of Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear and Fairport Convention—ten musicians in total plus chorus— will join the duo to perform the album in its entirely.
The group includes members of Lower Dens, Wye Oak and Celebration, as well as four guest vocalists: Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen, Hamilton Leithauser from the possibly defunct Walkmen, and Englishman Iain Matthews, best known for his work in Fairport Convention and Plainsong.
So far a total of four concerts have been announced, one each in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and New York. The Gene Clark documentary "The Byrd Who Flew Alone" will also screen at each appearance.
"[No Other] feels like a special moment in Gene Clark's songwriting," Legrand and Scally wrote in a press release. "At first, the overdone, studio nature of the album feels overbearing: the electric violin, the female chorus, the bass riffs, the layered guitar sequences. However, with more listens, Gene Clark's very unique lyrics, voice and spirit become the central focus. It's one of those records where each time you listen, you love a different song the most. Every song is nuanced and amazing in its own way."
Now, you may think the DVD review posted today below this one was to augment this announcement but you would be wrong. Writer Matthew Greenwald sent in the review weeks ago. Today, for some reason, I felt compelled to edit and post it.
When I got to the end of the edit, I took the liberty of adding the "no other" line to the conclusion. I then looked up "no other" just to see what else about that album I might find and I came upon a link to a U.K. The Guardian story about the tour that was published today.
This happens too often in my life for it to be a coincidence! But more importantly I have always felt a strong affection and appreciation for Gene Clark as readers of The Tracking Angle, musicangle.com and now this site would know. Forgive me for indulging myself but I can't help but think…well I'll stop here.
The New York concert is on Saturday January 25th at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. I will be there and so, I think, will Gene.

And probably the only one from tape. MOV does a very good job from files but in my experience files are files and tape is tape and rarely if ever does the file measure up to the tape. This record has become a cult item and because it sold so poorly when first released, there aren't that many copies floating around, especially since the folks who bought it new aren't parting with their copies any time soon. Let's hope for an eventual reissue from tape. Ditto the two Dillard and Clark LPs. Short but indespensable.

I'm going to see Bill Frisell tonight at the Barns At Wolf Trap, which will make the 21st show I'll have attended since July, 2012. Thinking ahead is the key, or so it seems. Maybe sometimes that's not possible.
